Founded in 2011 by award-winning designer Mahlet “Mafi” Afework, MAFI MAFI is a pioneering Ethiopian fashion brand that blends centuries-old handwoven textiles with contemporary design. What began with a single sewing machine has grown into an internationally recognized label showcased on runways from Addis Ababa to Paris, Milan, New York, Berlin, and Johannesburg.

At the heart of MAFI MAFI’s philosophy is the belief that African heritage and global relevance are not opposites but partners. Every piece is crafted from handwoven fabrics made by local artisans, celebrating Ethiopia’s rich traditions while reimagining them for today’s world. The result is modern, high-quality, and versatile designsthat speak to global audiences without losing their cultural authenticity.

Beyond its fashion collections, MAFI MAFI also provides design and manufacturing services for institutions and companies, including uniforms and bespoke apparel for banks, hotels, restaurants, and government bodies. These services maintain the same standard of quality and cultural sophistication that define the brand, offering clients distinctive designs that merge professionalism with identity.

As a social enterprise, the brand works closely with artisan weavers, women, and youth, creating dignified jobs and sustaining ancestral knowledge. This commitment to craftsmanship and community empowerment has made MAFI MAFI not only a fashion label, but also a movement for sustainability, cultural preservation, and innovation in Africa’s creative economy.

Extending its impact in education, Mahlet also founded the Mafi Fashion Academy and Lab (MFAL) — Ethiopia’s first international fashion institution. MFAL equips the next generation of designers with technical, business, and creative skills, blending African indigenous knowledge with global standards. With four programs, international partnerships, and a FabLab dedicated to African textiles, MFAL is shaping the future of the African fashion
